History of the Embassy

Relations between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the United States of America began with Missionary activities in the 19th century through commercial activites. The relations since then have been cordial, giving rise to the establishment of a resident Embassy in Washington DC on Thursday, April 27, 1961 at the level of Charge d'Affaires A.I.

Dr. W.H. Fitzjohn served in the capacity of Charge d'Affaires A.I. until June 26, 1961 when Dr. Richard Kelfa-Caulker was appointed as Sierra Leones first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States of America with residence in Washington DC.

Welcome to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC Website. We are pleased to offer this site as an information resource on Sierra Leone’s political, economic and cultural issues. Sierra Leone is proud of her cultural and historical ties with the United States and our strong US-Sierra Leone partnership in development.

Sierra Leone has risen from a decade old brutal civil war during which thousands of Sierra Leoneans were killed and many more displaced. We are glad that this unprovoked war has come to an end and that Sierra Leoneans are now enjoying maximum peace and security

We hope this website will provide its users with a better understanding of Sierra Leone and its people. Please feel free to browse through this site for updated information about Visa Regulations, Sierra Leone politics and culture, travel, tourism, and business potential.

Thank you for visiting.
